Abstract

Comparing the innovativeness of different cultural groups is difficult and probably not productive for advancing our understanding of innovative behavior at work. A more productive approach is to explore the association between specific cultural elements and innovative behavior. Following this approach, the relationship between two core elements of Chinese culture, face andrenqing(compassion for others), and innovative performance was evaluated in China with a multi-level design. Results showed that face-renqing was related to innovative behavior in a complex fashion, with denial of mistakes and fear of failures as mediating variables. Some of these relationships were moderated by two contextual variables: innovative climate and paternalistic leadership. Theoretical implications of the findings and directions for future research will be discussed.
