Topic:The Sustainability Imperative: Leadership Responsibility Challenges for the 21st Century and Beyond

Abstract:

Sustainability is a topic whose time has come to the fore, partly because of many recent dramatic ethical lapses at many high profile organizations placing an acute emphasis on the havoc caused by unsustainable practices, be they environmental, financial or otherwise. The focus on sustainability is also partly because of an increasingly educated populace, with ever more access to information, demanding greater stewardship. The confluence of these forces have put sustainability squarely in the spotlight for the 21st Century and beyond. The paradox of sustainability, however, is that it requires both leadership from above--those who set the agenda--and leadership to be more widely disbursed throughout organizational and societal systems--what has come to be known as shared leadership. The focus of my talk is on the topic of how to fortify top-level leaders for engaging and empowering shared leadership for the sustainability of both enterprise and environment, and for both prosperity and posterity.

Bio:

Craig L. Pearce, Ph.D., has garnered more than $16 Million in grants and contracts and is best known for his award winning work on shared leadership. He has lectured at such institutions as Harvard, Duke and Instituto de Empresa. His research has appeared in such journals as Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Management, Journal of Organizational Behavior and Academy of Management Perspectives and has been featured in Financial Times Agenda, Fortune and the Wall Street Journal.
